We always laugh when the drinks are poured, the glasses are raised for a toast and Pawpaw asks, "Where's the toast?"
Turns out, Pawpaw is historically accurate! While researching on the Wedding Photojournalists Association site, I learned that during Roman times, people actually dunked pieces of toast into goblets because the wine wasn't particularly tasty otherwise.
Apparently by the 1600s, European sailors were still found using toast. However, with better ale and mulled wine, the toast was used as part of a drinking game: the crusty pieces of bread were dropped into beverages; when they sank to the bottom, it was bottom's up.
A virtual Thanksgiving toast: "As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them." ~John Fitzgerald Kennedy
