The Master of Suspense-100 years.
Confession: I had never seen a single Alfred Hitchcock film or show until last year when I enrolled in "Films of Hitchcock" to support my concentration in English as film.
Realization: Sir Hitchcock truly earned his knighted name and his masterful style, both in directing and psychology, support his title, Master of Suspense.
I found myself leaning forward in my seat, quickly more enthralled with creeping shadows and dark dinner table discussions of films made more than 50 years ago than the graphic guts and in-your-face gore of modern movies.
Suggestions: Some of my favorite films of Hitchcock include the following:
- Strangers on a Train (1951)
- Rear Window (1954)
- Vertigo (1958)
- Psycho (1960)
Note:
- Watch them in order if you choose to do so.
- Note the role of leading man James Stewart in both Rear Window and Vertigo (where the direction in which he drives, up the street or down, predicts the mood).
- If you're feeling really nerdy, look at the list of what makes a film predictably Hitchcockian so you can spot them as you watch.
