saving some green

Green day: the afternoon started off with a green avocado egg sandwich.

Saturday morning I woke up early and went to see Debbie (church pianist) over at Ace Hardware. About this time last year is when I moved into this little house and my dad planted some lettuce out front. It did so well, that I wanted to get a little lettuce garden going again this year.

Spending only $15 on plants, I will save on salad spending--eating some green instead of spending it-- in about 50-65 days!

The choice: bibb lettuce, leaf lettuce, romaine lettuce and Georgia sweet onions.

The spot: a sunny patch in front of my house. Last year, the plants on this side produced the best and brightest leaves.

I started the afternoon with tennis shoes on...but it was nice and sunny and I quickly questioned this decision. I ripped off my socks and shoes and rolled up my sleeves and my jeans and played in the dirt all day.

Progress: It took a while to weed out the area I wanted, but when Bryan came over for dinner he asked me where I "bought" the dirt, so I guess I did a pretty good job of getting it ready:)

I brought out my ipod and played music all day so if plants really do respond to singing then these should take off well!

Ta da! I finished up and watered them just before night fell. Now I sit...and wait for food. Say, if onions grow underground, how do you know when they're ready?
